Different EXR file sizes

Hi!

Recently we added a new node to our small workstation-based farm.
Whenever it’s rendering, the file output is considerably smaller than the rest.
Our setup:

  • Windows 11
  • Max 2024
  • Corona 12 update 1
  • Pulze Render Manager 2.2.17

We’re using 32-bit multilayer EXR. What is interesting is that both outputs seem to have the correct layers included, 32-bit depth, etc. We weren’t able to detect any other differences than file size. What could be the reason?

Hi,

The size of the file will depend on the content of your image. If you compare the weight of an image with, for example, only a blue sky with the weight of an image containing a lot of details, it will be different. And even if the number of pixels, layers, is the same. Maybe that’s what’s happening in your case.
To be sure you would have to send the same image to be calculated on both nodes and then compare the weight of the images.

Thank you for your reply, however, I believe that’s not the case.

The frames are consecutive frames of a slow camera, with barely any differences except 1-3 px camera movement. On top of that, out of many machines, only this one particular node saves these small files.

Indeed, I had looked too quickly at the attached image and I had not seen that the difference was made on the same node.
When you look at these images is the quality good?

That’s the interesting part, quality seems to be the same, I tried comparing metadata, AOVs etc, and everything except the size seems to be the same.
